ISTO Americas

ISTO arrived in the Americas in 1994 and was legally established in 1996 under the name BITS-Americas. 1996 was also the year when BITS adopted a document defining the core values of the organisations, the Montreal Declaration - Towards a humanist and social vision of tourism', on the occasion of its general assembly held in the Americas. Social tourism existed on this continent long before the arrival of our organisation, but ISTO allowed for stronger links between the American and European stakeholders. The Montreal Declaration was the springboard that helped ISTO gain recognition on the continent.

ISTO Americas may only be 17 years old, but its existence is being increasingly noticed in American countries. Here, tourism is considered by many governements to be a luxury, not a factor for social and personal development. The great challenge of ISTO Americas is to keep promoting the implementation of tourism public policies on a continent that connects both poles.

In 1994 a ISTO Secretariat for the Americas (ISTO Americas) based in Montreal was created; it promotes and fosters contacts, coordination and exchanges among the countries of South America, Central America, the Caribean and North America.
